HISTORY
Death Pants
The Peffersburg Death Pants are the pants worn by famed Wild West Outlaw and Peffersburg Native “Cyclone” Pete Burkowitz. Cyclone Pete was born in what is now Peffersburg in the late 1800’s, and met his end while riding with the famous Lincoln County Regulators when the coward Jose Chavez y Chavez, played by Lou Diamond Phillips in Young Guns and Young Guns 2, shot Cyclone Pete no less than 12 times in the groin as he slept. Cyclone Pete’s bullet-riddled corpse was returned to his family in Peffersburg still dressed in the now-infamous Death Pants. The Peffersburg Historical Society has kept the pants all these years, and there is no greater symbol for the enduring spirit of our townspeople, which is why Peffersburg is PANTS PROUD!
Peffer Family
The city and county of Peffersburg was founded in 1900 by the late Colonel Johan Peffer. The Peffer family still resides largely in the county, and if you meet a Peffer, be sure to tell them how grateful you are that they founded our city and county, and named it after themselves.
